textiele werken zomerexpositie museum maassluis
Expositie t/m zondag 4 augustus 2019.

the coral garden
Studio Vanessa Barragão is a design studio focusing on the artisanal techniques and wasted yarns from the industry to produce textiles and products for interiors.
Growing up in the seaside, her connection to the ocean is the inspiration for her artworks. Vanessa Barragão’s work is characterized by her captivating environments of coral reefs, cleverly combining craft and recycled materials into unique and luxurious sculptural carpets and tapestries for floors and walls.
Vanessa was born in Albufeira, in the south of Portugal. Her studio was founded in 2014 when she attended a Master degree at the Lisbon University in fashion and textiles design. There she developed her first wool yarn collection and tapestries through an ecological artisanal process. Currently, she is based in Porto, the Northern region of Portugal where the nation’s textile industry core is located, and divides her time between collaborating as a textile designer for an artisanal rugs factory and running her studio.
The textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world. In almost everything process chemicals are used, specially when it comes to the fibers treatment and dyeing. All the machinery used requires tons of energy while producing a lot of waste and disposable trash. It is extremely harmful for our world and it affects all of its different natural environments, particularly the ocean which absorbs 90% of the atmosphere pollution, warming up itself to the point that so many species get threatened, being the corals, who sustain so many other creatures, one of the most endangered ones.
Vanessa believes in an upcycling effort towards the right way to try to fight against this kind of negative mindset described above. All the materials used come from the deadstock of several local factories which is first cleaned and then selected to recycle and reuse in her projects. Her production is completely artisanal and handmade by using ancestral techniques, like latch hook, felt, knitting, macrame and crochet, to create her artworks.

Aminah Robinson
Robinson was christened "Aminah" (derived from Aamina, mother of the Islamic prophet Muhamad) by an Egyptian cleric during her visit to Africa in 1979. She changed her name legally to include the forename in 1980.
Her art was shown at the Columbus Museum of Art, the Tacoma Art Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum. She died in 2015.
Her diverse body of work ranges from drawings and woodcuts to complex sculptures made from natural and synthetic materials, such as twigs, carved leather, music boxes, and "hogmawg," her own material composed of mud, grease, dyes, and glue. The artist's "Memory Maps" (multi-media constructions of appliquéd cloth panels) contain "the idea and symbols of Africa—as a reservoir of culture, as the abode of spirits and inspiration for form and meanings that have traversed the great transatlantic African Diaspora to the Americas.
Robinson had been the subject of nearly two hundred solo and group exhibitions before the 2002 retrospective, Symphonic Poem: The Art of Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson at the Columbus Museum of Art.

Her first solo exhibition "Doris Bush Nungarrayi: This is a Love Story" opened at Damien Minton Gallery, Sydney in 2012. Her work is held in the Maquarie Bank Collection, Artbank, and the University of Western Sydney collection.
Her father was Warlpiri and her mother Yalkutjari Nakamarra a Pintupi woman from the Kintore region whose father was ‘boss’ for the Kintore region. Doris is also known by her “bush name” Darinji. She married George Bush Tjangala, a Luritja/Amnatyerre speaking man whose family came from just west of Alice Springs. Together they had three sons. George Bush was one of Papunya Tula Artists’ original shareholders, though he did not paint much for the company apart from a brief period in the early 1980s. Doris was a familiar figure in some of the Aboriginal art galleries of Alice Springs. She became one of the most prolific and enthusias painters in the community.

ernesto neto, multimedia kunstenaar

expositie feminisme museum maasluis

Constructed of Jongstra’s trademark woollen felt textures dyed in black, not just any black, but the intriguing#BurgundianBlack, with its many shades and tones centring on the darkest color in the spectrum. In a gently simmering cauldron with plant pigments, artist-alchemist Jongstra benefits from her ‘secret knowledge’ and long experience in experimentation to re-discover the long lost process of procuring this famous 'Burgundian Black': the most complex and precious of true blacks based solely on natural ingredients and ancient recipes.

The Amsterdam Rainbow Dress is a living work of art, made of all the national flags from countries where homosexuality is illegal, on penalty of imprisonment, torture or capital punishment.
The Amsterdam Rainbow Dress has as a foundation the goal to encourage debate and awareness about inclusion and equal rights throughout the planet.
This iconic work of art in the shape of a dress encourages actively defending and celebrating the acquisition and institutionalization of freedom, while at the same showing the still disconcerting state of human rights in many parts of the world.
In addition to their ongoing projects, the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress Foundation strives to cooperate with governmental, corporate and other civic organizations in order to reach mutual goals and develop programs aimed at diversity an inclusion.

sheila hicks tapestry
Though her celebrated tapestries now hang in museums across the world, those she designed in 1967 for the Ford Foundation building in Manhattan have always been special to the textile artist Sheila Hicks.
A balance of detailed intricacy and monumental scale, they were made with an understated, honey-colored thread that warmed, but did not overwhelm, the rooms in which they hung and were important early works in what has stretched into a long career.
“In the ’60s, there were alternatives,´ Ms. Hicks said in an interview at the foundation building. “Rothko was alive. You could have brought color in here.” Instead, she opted for a subdued tone, so people “could spend hours in the room in meetings” without feeling an assault on the senses. But while being fireproofed sometime in the 1980s, the tapestries were saturated with a caustic chemical. Threads rotted, crisped and popped, and the work also suffered the wear and tear of time as people leaned or brushed their bags against them. “There was no reversal,” Ms. Hicks said of the damage.
“For 10 years, I’d been hearing about it: ‘What are we going to do?’ ” Ms. Hicks said. “The only thing I could do was roll up my sleeves and assemble a team.”
It is far from common for an artist to revisit the site of a commission to recreate the work of decades past. In Ms. Hicks’s case, the effort is particularly unusual.
She turned 85 in July. She lives in Paris. She had to finance much of the project herself. And at this stage in her career, she had nothing to prove.
“Even though everyone was against my doing this,” she said, “I thought it was a great way to go.”

vrouwenhuis maassluis expositie

HipSick creates ‘unusual theatre’. By flirting with performance art, dance and theatre- HipSick aims to induce the audience into the realm of the surreal. Their performances are a play on perception; using their own visually pungent style. The moving body is a foundational keystone in the creation process and definitive work. ‘We recently got fascinated by behavioral manipulation after seeing the documentary Hot Girls Wanted by Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus on Netflix. Some say morality is negotiable…’
We encounter an endless stream of apparent choices. Every day we make decisions that seem to make us to what we are today. But, are these decisions really our own? In PUPPIES FOR SALE we question the authenticity of our choices. We swim against the current, to see whether our proclaimed options are obvious or need to be examined.
