American writer Betty Friedan called in the sixties and Gloria Steinem in the seventies for equality in the workplace and at home. In the eighties the goal of Feminist art was to influence cultural attitudes and transform stereotypes. Female artists created works that represented a message about women's experience and the need for gender equality. Art was not anymore merely an object for aestetic admiration.
English performer, singer-songwriter Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and his wife Lady Jane embarked in 1995 on a Pandrogeny project. They called for different values about gender in the broadest sense and felt that people's ideas in general were far behind with technological developments. In 2017 Dutch political party 'Democraten 66' wants a new law againts all genderdiscrimination.
Indian artist Nalini Melani has her exhibition 'Transgressions' in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (March-June 2017). The show is a unique combination of video, paintings and moving shadows on Women & Violence
