The French/Portuguese artist (1971) who studied, lives and works in Lisbon, affirmed her international career with an enormous chandelier called 'The Bride'. A 20 ft sculpture made of 25.000 tampons exhibited at the 2005 Venice Biennale. Much of her work deals with feminism, nationality and family. Vasconcelos incorporates in her art old fashioned crafts like knitting and crochet transforming the everyday realities into intensive and colorful assemblages.
Joanna Vasconcelos was the first woman and the youngest contemporary artist to exhibit in Château de Versailles, Paris (2012).

We all know that men rule the art market, while women in general must struggle to move up the ladder. We are talking about gender discrimination in the cultural sector against female artists in the market for fine art. It seems a lot easier to be a mediocre but reasonably successful artist if you are a man. Unfortunately it is even in 2017 a different story for women. But if a woman manages to find art-market success, she is likely to be more successful than her male counterparts, researchers found. Artnet Analytics and Maastricht University note in a joint study that galleries may discriminate because they’re skeptical about emerging female artists’ future success. Dealers may be concerned that a woman will take time off to have children, thereby making her career less reliable than that of a man.

The studies show women also have less access to the social circles that might help them get through the door of a gallery. And if women are not certain they can support themselves through their art they are more likely to pursue alternate career paths.

Despite the challenges of Down syndrome, profound deafness, and thirty-five years of institutionalization Judith Scott (1943-2005) has been declared as "One of the most important artists of the twentieth century”.

When her twinsister became her guardian Judith moved to a nearby board-and-care home where she was enrolled in the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, the first organization in the world to provide studio space for artists with disabilities. After observing a class being given by a visiting fiber artist, Judith spontaneously started creating the sculptures, for which she has become famous.
Scott’s talent was recognized by Creative Growth’s staff, and she was given freedom to use whatever materials she wanted. Her objects were wrapped, woven and entwined in yarns and threads of selected hues, until the artist decided that the piece was complete.
Work immediately began on the next sculpture, which could grow nine feet in length. The small fragile looking woman worked five days a week for eighteen years, producing over 200 cocoon-like sculptures which today are found in museums and private collections around the world. She died in March, 2005, living the last 18 years in blissful creativity.

ria van eyk, textielkunstenaar

Ria van Eyk (1938) is een Nederlandse textielkunstenaar en kunstschilder. Van Eyk studeerde textiele vormgeving aan de Academie Industriële Vormgeving in Eindhoven en nam tegelijkertijd schilderlessen.
Van Eyk wint de Beeldende Kunstprijs 2014 van het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Noord-Brabant, de belangrijkste kunstprijs in de provincie. Bij de prijs hoort een bedrag van 10.000 euro. Ook kreeg zij van koningin Beatrix de gouden Eremedaille voor Kunst en Wetenschap van de Huisorde van Oranje. De Eindhovense kunstenares, ontwerpster van onder meer het 'sterrenhemeltapijt' in het Paleis op de Dam, is een van de belangrijkste wegbereiders voor de emancipatie van de textielkunst, met name door haar monumentale toepassingen van textiel in de architectuur. Haar werk bestaat uit wandkleden, schilderijen, tekeningen en werken in opdracht.

Het bijzondere viltwerk van Claudy Jongstra is opgenomen in wereldwijde museumcollecties. Zij maakt textiele werken die zich kenmerken door het gebruik van natuurlijke materialen. De toonaangevende Nederlandse kunstenares en ontwerpster begon haar internationale carrière met het stofontwerp voor de Jedi uit Star Wars en werkte samen met (inter)nationaal vermaarde kunstenaars, architecten (Rem Koolhaas) en modeontwerpers.  

De kunstwerken van Jongstra zijn mooi en hebben een grote aaibaarheidsfactor, maar zij is tevens een kunstenaar met een missie. Met het duurzame en ambachtelijke productieproces wil ze, samen met haar team, bijdragen aan een betere wereld. In haar ververij creëert zij voor de vervilte wol Rembrandt-achtige kleuren, gedestilleerd uit haar kruiden- en plantenteelt. Planten die ooit van nature in Friesland groeiden. Voor de monumentale textiele ontwerpen worden zijde en verschillende soorten wol gebruikt naast de wol van haar kudde Drentse heideschapen, een eeuwenoud Europees ras dat vermaard is om de langdradige vacht.

De kunstenares werkt en woont teruggetrokken met haar gezin op een boerderij in Friesland.

Shouchiku Tanabe has inherited the Japanese tradition of bamboo art from his ancestors. His great grandfather was the first bamboo artist in Japan. As a small child he started learning bamboo art from his father. Later he graduated from Craft and Art Educations, but he continues working and exhibiting with his family.

Brazilian artist Renato Dib creates exquisite adaptations of the human form using velvet, silk, and other materials. The intimacy of the human form serves as an endless source of inspiration in his work. 

When he started to paint he  soon noticed the tactile sense of fabrics. The canvas was not anymore just a surface to be painted, but some kind of representation of the skin.
In an interview with www.textileartist.org he explaines that his mother, a seamstress, inspired him to work with textiles. When he was 21, he went to college to get an education in fine arts in São Paulo. At the same time, he went to the studio of Leda Catunda (textile artist) to help him think about his work. He never went to sewing, embroidery or tricot classes; every technique he uses was self-taught

De dood is een poort naar het licht voor hen die naar de ‘andere oever’ reizen. We weten weinig van de gebieden die ons bewustzijn na de dood van het lichaam betreedt en waar het ’s nachts tijdens de slaap binnengaat. 

Volgens de reïncarnatieleer van mevrouw Blavatsky volgen we deze wegen alsof we daarheen worden aangetrokken, zoals vogels rondtrekken door magnetische krachtlijnen te volgen. Op dezelfde manier vinden mensen, na misschien jaren van reizen op de innerlijke gebieden, de weg terug naar de aarde.
De slaap accepteren we, maar de dood lijkt iets anders te zijn. Misschien is de dood te aanvaarden als de manier om levenskrachten te herstellen. Dat het bevrijden van de ziel van een ziekelijk en van een oud lichaam een zegen is. Wanneer de dood komt wordt er een kracht gevoeld die groter is dan die we kunnen begrijpen. De onomkeerbaarheid ervan wordt ervaren. Toch is er tevens de geruststelling dat de banden met degenen van wie we houden onsterfelijk zijn. 

Hommage aan de  dierbaren, die alle vijf in een bizar korte tijd veel te vroeg door ziekte gedwongen werden de aarde te verlaten......

shiela hicks in glasgow

De Amerikaanse kunstenaar Sheila Hicks (1934) is met haar oeuvre internationaal bekend. Sinds eind jaren vijftig maakt zij met haar kleurrijke werk furore. Haar kunstwerken variëren van  textiele installaties tot sculpturen en miniaturen.In die tijd werd ze tevens opgeleid tot schilder door oud-Bauhaus docent Josef Albers. In 1956 liet kunsthistoricus George Kubler haar in Yale kennis maken met pre-Colombiaans weven. Na afronding van haar thesis over dit onderwerp, werd haar een studiebeurs toegekend om te gaan schilderen in Chili. Tijdens haar verblijf in Zuid-Amerika ontwikkelde zij een interesse voor het werken met textiel. Het werd een passie en bracht haar over de hele wereld. Overal waar ze kwam, werkte ze samen en wisselde ze kennis uit met lokale ambachtslieden, fabrikanten en kunstenaars. Haar kleurrijke installaties zijn wereldwijd te bewonderen en nog altijd werkt zij aan textiele projecten in haar studio in Parijs. Hicks’ kunstwerken zijn opgenomen in de collecties van het Metropolitan Museum of Art, het Museum of Modern Art in New York en het Tate Modern in Londen. www.sheilahicks.com
