Shiota's oeuvre links various aspects of art performance and installation practices. Mostly renown for her vast, room-spanning webs of threads or hoses, she links abstract networks with concrete everyday objects such as keys, windows, dresses, shoes, boats and suitcases. Besides installation works, she frequently collaborates with choreographers and composers for opera, concert and dance projects. Her exhibition, the sensation of the Textile Biennal 2015 in Venice, is on display till October 15th 2017 in the Noordbrabants Museum of the Netherlands. www.hetnoordbrabantsmuseum.nl

Celebrity came late to the model and fashion-world personality
Iris Apfel
While the “geriatric starlet,” as she calls herself, may be advanced in years, her fame is quite young. In 2005, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art had a sudden and unexpected hole to fill for its fall show. Curator Harold Koda asked the relatively unknown fashion maven if she would contribute pieces from her incredible collection of jewelry and clothing acquired throughout her life. The resulting show, Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Apfel Collection, was a spectacular success.
“Life is grey and dull. You may as well have a little fun when you dress and amuse people,” Iris is seen telling an enthralled crowd of museum goers who stand surrounded by her outrageous and enchanting stylings. Previously, Apfel had enjoyed a modest amount of renown in the design world. She was a long-time interior designer, and, with her beloved late husband Carl, had founded a textile company, Old World Weavers. They even collaborated on the White House restorations.

female icons of the bauhausschool
![]() |
| textile artwork by Anni Albers |
The male icons of the early-20th-century Bauhaus school, like Josef Albers, László Moholy-Nagy, and Paul Klee, are some of the celebrated pioneers of modern art. But the women artists who made groundbreaking work with them are often remembered in history books as wives of their male counterparts. While women were allowed into the German school female students were encouraged to pursue weaving rather than mediums like painting, carving, and architecture. Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius believed that men thought in three dimensions, while women could only handle two.
The year 2019 will mark the 100th birthday of the Bauhaus. As that date approaches, this bias toward the school’s male students is being revised, and its female members recognized by scholarship and exhibitions. Weavers, industrial designers, photographers, and architects like Anni Albers, Marianne Brandt, and Gertrud Arndt not only advanced the school’s historic marriage of art and function; they were also essential in laying the groundwork for centuries of art and design innovation to come after them.

klee's bauhaus teachings
Lesson 1:
take a line for a walk

“An active line on a walk, moving freely, without goal.” So begins Klee’s Pedagogical Sketchbook, which served as something of a textbook for many Bauhaus students. Five pages follow this famous description of the most basic of human marks, outlining the various types of lines, from those that circumscribe themselves to others that contain fixed points. Each example is accompanied by a diagram, which Klee likely drew on the blackboard during his lectures. Many of Klee’s lessons center around this type of categorization, demonstrating the multiple ways in which a point can become a line, a line can become a plane, and so on. Beginning with the fundamentals, Klee modeled his teaching methods after the way children learn to read. “First letters, then symbols, then, finally, how to read and write,” he explained. Just as you can rearrange a series of letters to make different words, Klee would ask his students to repeat the same form in as many positions as possible. Such painstaking tasks would lay the groundwork for future works of art and design, and needed to be mastered before tone and color entered the picture.

We all need a place where we can go, to escape from stress, trouble or sorrow. I have found such a place to call my own. Peaceful but exciting and for me alone. This Magic Circle has so many things I need Comfort in my sorrow from unkind word or deed. Peace at the end of a long and trying day. Encouragement when I falter on life's pathway. Inside this Magic Circle I've shed so many tears; also shared my laughter my dreams and my fears. I've shared so much excitement, love and fun. Buy Vintage / Consignment: YES. Vintage, consignment and second hand ARE ethical + conscious + sustainable options! Apart from wearing what’s already in your closet, or borrowing from a friend, this is the best option for buying something “new”, or new to you at least. Not only can you get high quality or even luxury pieces at affordable prices by shopping second hand, you can also cycle in “on trend” or “was a trend and is a trend again” options easily. Buying used is always better than buying new when it comes to decreasing our environmental footprint. 👣

(Textile) artist Yinka Shonibare (1962) was born in London and moved to Lagos, Nigeria at the age of three. He returned to London to study Fine Art.
Shonibare’s work explores issues of race and class through the media of painting, sculpture, photography and film. Shonibare questions the meaning of cultural and national definitions.
His trademark material is the brightly coloured ‘African’ batik fabric (wax-printed cotton) he buys in London. This type of fabric was inspired by Indonesian design, mass-produced by the Dutch and eventually sold to the colonies in West Africa. In the 1960s the material became a new sign of African identity and independence.
Shonibare was a Turner prize nominee in 2004, and was also awarded the decoration of Member of the ‘Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’ or MBE, a title he has added to his professional name.

history of textile art: gunta stölzl (1897-1983)
![]() |
| 'slit tapestry red/green' 1928 |
Gunta Stölzl was a German textile artist who played a fundamental role in the development of the Bauhaus school’s weaving workshop. As the Bauhaus' only female master she created enormous change within the weaving department as it transitioned from individual pictorial works to modern industrial designs. Her textile work is thought to typify the distinctive style of Bauhaus textiles. She joined the Bauhaus as a student in 1920, became a junior master in 1927 and a full master the next year. She was dismissed for political reasons in 1931, two years before the Bauhaus closed under pressure from the Nazis.
The textile department was a neglected part of the Bauhaus when Ms. Stölzl began her career, and its active masters were weak on the technical aspects of textile production. She soon became a mentor to other students and reopened the Bauhaus dye studios in 1921. After a brief departure, Stölzl became the school's weaving director in 1925 when it relocated from Weimar to Dessau and expanded the department to increase its weaving and dyeing facilities. She applied ideas from modern art to weaving, experimented with synthetic materials, and improved the department's technical instruction to include courses in mathematics. The Bauhaus weaving workshop became one of its most successful facilities under her direction. (wikipedia)

feminist art

American writer Betty Friedan called in the sixties and Gloria Steinem in the seventies for equality in the workplace and at home. In the eighties the goal of Feminist art was to influence cultural attitudes and transform stereotypes. Female artists created works that represented a message about women's experience and the need for gender equality. Art was not anymore merely an object for aestetic admiration.
English performer, singer-songwriter Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and his wife Lady Jane embarked in 1995 on a Pandrogeny project. They called for different values about gender in the broadest sense and felt that people's ideas in general were far behind with technological developments. In 2017 Dutch political party 'Democraten 66' wants a new law againts all genderdiscrimination.

oeroude vrijheidskreet
Monumentally-scaled and minimally composed, yet
intimate and warm in their conception and craft, Claudy Jongstra’s tapestries
and textiles bring a quiet presence and humanity to the modern architecture
they often inhabit.
The macroscopic compositions of Jongtra’s wall-sized organic
abstractions suggest microscopic views of the plants and animals from which
their materials are sourced. Here, large expanses of color are modulated by the
texture and patterns of felted wool, raw silk, and plant fibers. Forms that
appear suspended are in fact often swatches of contrasting chromatic fiber and
texture, enmeshed but not fully metabolized into their
background.
Jongstra’s materials give shape to not only to the work’s
physicality, but equally, to its meaning. Furthermore, the way in which form
and content are brought into being too carries a conceptual valence, one driven
by ethics and conservation. Indeed, sustainability, respect, self-sufficiency,
and cooperation are at the foundation of Jongstra’s studio community and the
creation of each work. But hers is not just eco-activism or social practice
interested in localization at the level of production and consumption. Rather,
each step of her holistic collaborative process also recalls, revives, and
preserves the history of the land where it is made; it is as much about place
as people.

sustainable fibers
Finally, the fashion industry realizes we cannot continue the overconsumption trend in a world where the rising population will have to devote more land to food – or even energy. We cannot continue to grow cotton like mad, nor can we endlessly spin fossil fuels into polyester or other synthetic fabrics. The road toward more sustainable fibers will be a long one with plenty of failures and misses, but it is one we need to take. And while there’s still plenty to be done, the use of sustainable fibers is slowly rising. Read on to learn more about how five textiles – cotton, hemp, bamboo, synthetics and recycled fabrics – are shaping sustainability in the fashion industry. http://www.triplepundit.com/2015/02/rise-sustainable-fibers-fashion-industry/ (19 maart 2015 / Gepubliceerd door: Ellen Mensink)

stichting creative city lab
