Het was in de tijd van het radioprogramma 'Hoor Haar' van Hanneke Groenteman en van de feministische groep 'Dolle Mina'. Het was in die tijd dat ik werkte als vrijwilliger in het theehuis van de 'Toverbal'. De Toverbal, het jongerencentrum, dat door de weeks vooral bevolkt werd met jongens, die graag een meisje wilden ontmoeten. Vanuit het bestuur kwam de suggestie om 'iets' voor meiden te organiseren en samen met administratieve ondersteuner Saskia van Hese begon ik 'iets' voor meiden te organiseren. Iedereen was enthousiast en de jongens gaven alle medewerking. Er werd een prachtige poster gedrukt, een advertentie gemaakt en heerlijke kruidenthee geserveerd.

De meiden die het onconventionele jongerencentrum in het weekend bezochten waren druk met opleidingen, met banen en toonden weinig interesse in het initiatief. Zo ontstond in de spirit van de Toverballer van het eerste uur een vrouwencafé met feministische thema avonden. Er was geen extra budget en met boeken uit mijn boekenkast begon Saskia een vrouwenbieb op te zetten. 

Het waren vooral moeders met kleine kinderen, die eind jaren 70 aan de oproep in de lokale krant gehoor gaven. Voor sommigen ging er een wereld open. De ontwikkeling van de vrouw stond centraal. De onvrede van de vrouw die geacht werd haar baan op te zeggen, als ze zwanger was. Ook kwamen thema's zoals 'Baas in eigen Buik', 'Zelfvertrouwen en Respect' aan bod. De avonden werden drukbezocht, maar niet door de doelgroep van het jongerencentrum. Dit resulteerde uiteindelijk in Vrouwenhuis SIEN op de Noordvliet, waar deze bijzondere expositie naar terugblikt.

U vraag zich misschien anno 2019 af waarom nu nog Feminisme? Dat is toch allang achterhaald? Er kan toch inmiddels het 100-jarige kiesrecht voor vrouwen gevierd worden? En vrouwen hebben banen, ze kunnen een flitsscheiding aanvragen, er zijn kinderdagverblijven en er zijn steeds meer vrouwen in de politiek actief. Maar helaas geacht publiek, volgens redelijk recente cijfers blijkt dat  het moderne, tolerante Nederland hoog scoort als het gaat om geweld tegen vrouwen. In de EU heeft gemiddeld 1 op de 3 vrouwen te maken met geweld van een man. In Nederland is dat 1 op de 5. En dat zijn er 5 te veel.

Natuurlijk kan ik u met nog meer cijfers vermoeien, maar dat doe ik op deze feestelijke dag liever niet. De werkgroep is heel blij met de expositie die terugblikt, maar ook naar de toekomst kijkt. 
Mocht u zin hebben om over feministische zaken te komen praten, dan is bijna 3 maanden lang iedere zaterdagmiddag van 15.00-17.00 uur iemand aanwezig op de benedenverdieping in de Podiumzaal. Er staat een kopje thee klaar. Ook kunt u de korte docu over drie initiatiefnemers van het vrouwenhuis bekijken. U kunt de feministische literatuur doorbladeren én de prachtige expositie nogmaals bezoeken. (lezing en kunstwerk van Ida Broekhart)

Iris Apfel (1921) is an American Jewish businesswoman, interior designer, and fashion icon. Apfel is the only child of Samuel Barrel, whose family owned a glass-and-mirror business, and his Russian-born wife, who owned a fashion boutique.
She studied art history at New York University and attended art school at the University of Wisconsin.
As a young woman, Apfel worked for Women's Wear Daily and for interior designer Elinor Johnson.

In 1948 she married Carl Apfel (1914-2015) Two years later they launched the textile firm Old World Weavers and ran it until they retired in 1992. From 1950 to 1992 Iris took part in several design restoration projects, including work at the White House for nine presidents.

Through their business, the couple began traveling all over the world where she began buying pieces of non-Western, artisanal clothes. She wore these clothes to clients' high-society parties. In 2011 Iris became a visiting professor at The University of Texas at Austin in its Division of Textiles and Apparel. In 2016, she performed in a television commercial for a French car and was the face of Australian brand Blue Illusion. In March 2016, Apfel announced a collaboration with technology startup WiseWear on an upcoming line of Smart Jewelry. In 2018 she published a book entitled Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon.
In 2019, at the age of 97, she signed a modeling contract with global agency.

Ida Brookhart: 'De Schreeuw'

Het fraai gelegen Douanehuisje met uitzicht op het Scheur herbergt in de maand mei de kunstenaars 
Ida Brookhart en Jannie van Essen.

In hun mixed media kunstwerken maken beide kunstenaars een knipoog naar duurzaamheid. Zij hergebruiken allerlei materialen in hun kleurrijke borduurwerk, mixed media textielwerk, soft sculptures én draagbare kunst.

Ida Brookhart is geboren in Maassluis; ze volgde o.a. de opleiding aan de ABK Psychopolis in den Haag. Ida gaf jarenlang les in het middelbare beroepsonderwijs, was actief bij de Kunstroute Kralingen/Crooswijk Rotterdam en is lid van de kunstenaarsvereniging Krimpener Kunstwaard. Op haar blog www.idabrookhart.blogspot.com deelt ze haar visie op de ontwikkelingen over duurzaamheid, mixed media textielkunst en feminisme. Haar kunstwerken zijn gepubliceerd in zowel Nederlandse als Engelstalige media en werden tentoongesteld in binnen- en buitenland. Met haar kunstwerken wil ze aandacht vestigen op de intergenerationele balans. Brookhart werkt veelal met (industrieel) afval, dat ze verwerkt in haar objecten. Daarnaast focust ze op het thema vrijheid en dit in het bijzonder voor vrouwen. Parallel aan deze expositie wordt vanaf 11 mei t/m 4 augustus ook werk van Brookhart tentoongesteld in Museum Maassluis, Zuiddijk 16-18. Officiële opening op zaterdag 11 mei om 11.00 uur.

Jannie van Essen woont en werkt in Schoonhoven. Zij volgde in de zestiger jaren aan de ABK Rotterdam de opleiding Decoratieve- en Nijverheidskunst. Jannie, een veelzijdig kunstenaar, heeft een affiniteit met textiele kunst en werkt veelal met gebruikte stoffen en garens. Zij was werkzaam bij de gemeente Rotterdam, geeft workshops en cureert exposities. Van Essen is actief bij de kunstenaarsverenigingen Krimpener Kunstwaard en de Firma van Drie in Gouda. Jannie schept in haar werk met kleur een eigen, soms dromerige, wereld die voor haar vrijheid en ruimte symboliseert. Vogels en luchten bevolken die vaak, maar ook denkbeeldige figuren. Zij wil de toeschouwer meenemen in deze wereld, waarin zij zich vrij voelt als de vogels en zich mee laat drijven met de wolken. Ook Van Essen heeft werk in een parallelle expositie hangen, vanaf 8 mei t/m 23 juni in De Hoge Vierschaar aan de Stadhuisstraat te Schoonhoven. Officiële opening is 10 mei 19.30 uur. De expositie wordt officieel geopend door Nadîja Roza Broekhart, theatermaker & oprichter van Hipsick Unusual Theatre en directeur cultureel platform Roodkapje Rotterdam. Tevens is er een optreden van Hanneke Leroux, stadsdichter van Gouda van 2016-2018. In dat kader schreef Leroux de dichtbundel ‘Stadsberichten’.

De expositie is vanaf zaterdag 4 mei tot en met zondag 2 juni 2019 te bezichtigen. Entree is gratis. De openingstijden zijn op woensdag, zaterdag en zondag van 13.00 tot 17.00 uur. Er is altijd een kunstenaar tijdens de openingsuren aanwezig. De expositie in het Douanehuisje aan de  Govert van Wijnkade 52, Maassluis, Zuid Holland is een initiatief van de Culturele Raad Maassluis.

Weet jij waar je t-shirt vandaan komt? Op een tour door de katoen tentoonstelling kun je zien hoe fijn zaad kleurrijk textiel wordt. Hier kunt je de verscheidenheid aan katoen ervaren, het pad van de katoen volgen, de schaduw van de textielsector bekijken en oplossingen voor meer duurzaamheid. 

De tentoonstelling "biologisch & fair van zaad tot t-shirt" wordt georganiseerd door het Forchunginstitut für biologischen Landbau en zal van 10 augustus t/m 29 september 2019 te zien zijn in de botanische tuin van de universiteit van Zürich.

Ida Brookhart and Jannie van Essen will exhibit in the beautifully situated 'Douanehuisje', Govert van Wijnkade 52 overlooking the Scheur river in Maassluis.
The art forms on display - from colourful embroidery, mixed media, soft sculptures to wearable art - have been created with a nod to sustainability.
On Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, one of the artists will always be present
from 1 pm to 5 pm.
The exhibition will be officially opened by Nadîja Roza Broekhart, theatermaker, performer, founder of HipSick Unusual Theatre and general director artplatform Roodkapje Rotterdam. Also a perfomance by Hanneke Leroux, citypoet in Gouda from 2016-2018. In that context she wrote the poetry collection "City reports".

Though her celebrated tapestries now hang in museums across the world, those she designed in 1967 for the Ford Foundation building in Manhattan have always been special to the textile artist Sheila Hicks.

A balance of detailed intricacy and monumental scale, they were made with an understated, honey-colored thread that warmed, but did not overwhelm, the rooms in which they hung and were important early works in what has stretched into a long career.
“In the ’60s, there were alternatives,´ Ms. Hicks said in an interview at the foundation building. “Rothko was alive. You could have brought color in here.” Instead, she opted for a subdued tone, so people “could spend hours in the room in meetings” without feeling an assault on the senses. But while being fireproofed sometime in the 1980s, the tapestries were saturated with a caustic chemical. Threads rotted, crisped and popped, and the work also suffered the wear and tear of time as people leaned or brushed their bags against them. “There was no reversal,” Ms. Hicks said of the damage.

“For 10 years, I’d been hearing about it: ‘What are we going to do?’ ” Ms. Hicks said. “The only thing I could do was roll up my sleeves and assemble a team.”
It is far from common for an artist to revisit the site of a commission to recreate the work of decades past. In Ms. Hicks’s case, the effort is particularly unusual.
She turned 85 in July. She lives in Paris. She had to finance much of the project herself. And at this stage in her career, she had nothing to prove.
“Even though everyone was against my doing this,” she said, “I thought it was a great way to go.”

Ida Brookhart: 'Ode aan de Suffragettes'
in ontwikkeling

In Nederland ontstond begin 1900 de 1ste feministische golf in navolging van de Suffragette Movement in Engeland. De suffragettes hebben, onder leiding van Emmeline Pankhurst, veel werk verricht voor de (internationale) vrouwenbeweging.
In Nederland kunnen we dientengevolge in 2019  het 100 jarige kiesrecht voor vrouwen vieren.

Op  zaterdag 11 mei is de feestelijke opening van de expositie Sien, Vos & het Vrouwenhuis over de feministische beweging in Maassluis. Er is een korte film gemaakt met interviews van enkele initiatiefnemers door journalist  Annemieke van Vlier en de filmclub Maassluis. Er is een FB-pagina geopend en feministische (textiel) kunst is onderdeel van de tentoonstelling.

Textiel wandobject 'Ode aan de Suffragettes' heeft al in het museum gehangen voor de filmopnames.
Het textielwerk is gemaakt met een boomtak, vintage garens, kralen & barbiepop; kant uit grootmoeder's nalatenschap; plastic afval en geometrische origami van papier.

In mei 2019 wordt in het Museum Maasluis een expositie geopend over het Feminisme in Maassluis. De expositie blikt terug, maar toont ook het nu.

Eind jaren 70 van de 20ste eeuw werd er een vrouwencafé geopend in het jongerencentrum de Toverbal. Toen de vrouwenbeweging begin jaren 80 begon te groeien kon er met subsidie vrouwenhuis "SIEN" geopend worden op een andere locatie. Dat huis heeft ongeveer 15 jaar bestaan met succesvolle activiteiten en thema's zoals 'Baas in eigen Buik', FORTherapie,  VOSamenleving en Feministische Theologie. Ook was er een kleine vrouwenbieb.

In 2018 werden er documenten en foto's bij een verhuizing op zolder gevonden en is er het initiatief onstaan om alle gegevens te documenteren, met als resultaat een actieve tentoonstelling in het museum: foto's, kunst, film en meer.

Valentina Stefanescu, hoofddocent aan de Arts & Design Faculty West University Timisoara, organiseert de  Internationale Biënnale Miniature-kunst 2018 in Roemenië.

Op uitnodiging zijn twee textiele werkjes van Ida Brookhart Contemporary Art aan de Biënnale jury voorgedragen en goedgekeurd voor deelname.

Vanwege de viering van het 100-jarige bestaan van het Nederlandse vrouwenkiesrecht in 2019 kreeg het project, waarvan de twee werkjes onderdeel zijn, 'Onafhankelijke vrouwen' als naam. Het kunstproject bestaat uit een aantal geborduurde mini-textiel kunstwerkjes met vrolijke vrouwen en verschillende beroepen. Het is een pleidooi voor wereldwijd goed onderwijs voor meisjes, zodat zij een beroep kunnen kiezen en onafhankelijke vrouwen kunnen worden.

Opening van de Biënnale in Timisoara is op vrijdag 26 oktober, 14.00 uur. De kunstmanifestatie duurt t/m donderdag 15 november. http://www.arte.uvt.ro

Van 7 juli tot 20 augustus 2018 exposeert Ida Brookhart Contemporary Art met mixed media schilderijen in galerie 'Lokaal 54' in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.

Terneuzen is de geboortestad van Mathilde Willink-Doelder. Tijdens deze zomer tentoonstelling met als thema 'Mathilde' vertegenwoordigen 3 galeries totaal 38 kunstenaars met schilderijen, beelden, foto's, textiel en sieraden. De kunstwerken zijn geinspireerd op fotomodel Mathilde Willink. In de jaren 70 van de vorige eeuw was zij de muse van beeldend kunstenaar Carel Willink en modeontwerpster Fong Leng. De jonge, mooie, intelligente Mathilde gedroeg zich als een levend kunstwerk en zorgde er met die houding voor dat Willink en Leng wereld beroemd werden.

De gevarieerde tentoonstellingen zijn zeer de moeite waard om te bezoeken. De eigenaresse van galerie 'Lokaal 54', kunstenares Anne Mannaerts, heeft ook nog eens haar atelier met  assemblage beelden open gesteld. In het café op de bovenverdieping van de galerie, met kunst aan de muur en sieraden in de vitrines,  kan een drankje worden genuttigd.

Helma van Kleinwee: 'Pure Vreugde'

Van 15 juni tot en met 15 augustus 2018 exposeert Helma van Kleinwee (1955) in het Paviljoen van Natuur & Cultuurpark Vijversburg. Haar gehaakte en gebreide textielwerk tonen  een samenzijn van kleurrijke mensfiguren. Deze dametjes zijn bont van kleur en speels in vormgeving met vrolijke tinten en humoristische details: “Pure Vreugde”. Het haakwerk en het op de breimachine vervaardigd textiel groeien al werkende uit de handen van de kunstenares.

De Theesalon en het Paviljoen zijn in de zomermaanden open op vrijdag-, zaterdag- en maandagmiddag vanaf 13.00 en zondag vanaf 11.00 uur.

Berthe Moriset: vrouw met kind

Henriëtte Faas van uitgeverij De Brouwerij geeft een dichtbundel uit van de Vlaamse dichteres Ina Stabergh over de Franse kunstenares en feministe Berthe Morisot (1841-1895). Morisot was tijdgenoot van de schilders Degas, Manet, Monet, Pissaro en Renoir.  Zij was de eerste vrouw die zich aansloot bij de groep impressionisten en dat was in die tijd ongewoon voor een vrouw. Ondanks de protesten van familieleden en vrienden bleef zij streven naar erkenning van haar kunstvorm. Ook ging zij ging dwars tegen de normen en waarden in door haar passie voor de schilderkunst in praktijk te brengen.

Ina Stabergh publiceert sinds 1981 proza. In 1983 debuteerde zij met poëzie in literaire en andere tijdschriften. Haar werk werd vaak bekroond, vertaald en meerdere keren uitgevoerd door bekende koren en dirigenten.

OPZIJ sprak onlangs Zubeida Agha en Frida Kahlo, twee van de Guerrilla Girls. Deze groep feministische activisten met vaste kern en wisselende samenstelling zet zich al meer dan dertig jaar in voor diversiteit in de kunstwereld. De namen die de leden dragen, namelijk die van overleden vrouwelijke kunstenaars, zorgen er samen met de gorillamaskers voor dat de Guerilla Girls, zelf ook kunstenaars, anoniem blijven. Ter gelegenheid van Internationale Vrouwendag waren zij in Nederland en bezochten het MaMa Cash festival in het Stedelijk Museum, waar zij spraken over hun werk en het belang daarvan.

'Feministes worden vaak van klagen beschuldigd. In plaats van ervoor weg te rennen, gingen jullie met het concept aan de haal door een Complaints Department in Tate Modern te openen. Mensen konden hier terecht om op creatieve wijze te klagen over alles wat ze dwars zat. Waarom kozen jullie ervoor het klagen tot een kunst te verheffen?' After leaving Facebook Gabriëlle Marie started a personal BLOG about art, photograpy, digital art and work in progress.

This contemporary artist teaches digital painting & drawing and is free lance textile artist, digital painter,  advisor & coach for conceptional art and for realising personal digital projects. 

Gabriëlle teaches and is coaching people who want to learn digital drawing and painting, with several digital programs. She is also contributer on a daily basis for a Facebook club/group about Art.

This versatile fine art artist studied textile art & photography at the Willem de Koning Academy in Rotterdam and has her studio in the Randstad Area.

Vanaf 5000 tot 3000 jaar v. Chr. werd textiel in Europa verfraaid met borduursels. De Nederlandse Kunstenares Jannie van Essen heeft een passie voor textielwerk en gebruikt daarin vaak het eeuwenoude medium borduren. Deze manier van handwerk is een tijdrovende maar meditatieve bezigheid waarbij Jannie, zoals ze zelf zegt,  'kunstzinnige eitjes uitbroedt'.

Jannie studeerde in de jaren 80 aan de pionierende textielafdeling van de Willem de Kooning academie te Rotterdam. Nadat de naaldkunst zoals borduren, macramé, breien en haken decennia lang alleen voor oude omaatjes was, is deze kunstvorm aan een revival bezig. Ze is weer terug van weg geweest en zelfs hot & happening. Over de hele wereld is er belangstelling voor textiele kunst, het grote aantal kunstboeken en tentoonstellingen in vooraanstaande musea.

Qua kunst leven we anno 2018 in een periode van anarchie. In het vrije Westen is alles op dat gebied  geoorloofd.  En hoewel in de oudheid deze kunstvorm een mannen aangelegenheid was, kan vandaag de dag zowel klassiek als abstract textielwerk door iedereen toegeëigend worden.

De luchten van Jannie van Essen hebben een dromerige uitstraling. Er is een vogel die van het doek af wil vliegen. In die wereld begeef ik me graag. Niet voor niets zal het sprookjesachtige een leidend thema zijn in onze duo-tentoonstelling,  die in het Douanehuisje van Maassluis georganiseerd wordt.

“The notion that you can make an artist overnight, that there is nothing but genius, and a dash of temperament in artistic success is a fallacy,” American artist Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) asserted in 1928. The year before, she’d been given her successful first retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum. But O’Keeffe wasn’t done developing as an artist—or contemplating what it meant to be one. “Great artists don’t just happen, any more than writers, or singers, or other creators,” she continued. “They have to be trained, and in the hard school of experience.”
Lesson 1: Observe the world around you—closely, hungrily
Through this process of close looking, O’Keeffe sought to communicate the essence of her surroundings: “It is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis,” she said in 1922, “that we get at the real meaning of things.”
Lesson 2: Organization is key to productivity
She kept her studios, her palette and brushes clean and neat. The palette is on a table she can wheel about—another one is on the window sill—the easel is by the window—another easel is on the window sill. One ten foot table is full of canvas and stretchers and hammers and tacks—then there is a small table full of little pieces of canvas covered cards painted tones of all the colors she has.

Lesson 3: Don’t sweat mistakes—learn from them
She painted the patio door of her New Mexico home more than 20 times. “I have a single-track mind. I work on an idea for a long time,” she told art historian Katharine Kuh. “Success doesn’t come with painting one picture. It results from taking a certain definite line of action and staying with it,” she continued.
Lesson 4: Pay no attention to trends—be yourself
O’Keeffe desired freedom—from artistic trends, from the pressures of the mainstream art world, from the fetters of a male-dominated society. And it was by bucking expectations that she made a unique and revolutionary body of work. “I believe in having everything and doing everything you want,” she once wrote, “if you really want to—and if you can in any possible way.” O’Keeffe lived her dream uncompromisingly and ecstatically.

Roodkapje cordially invites you to the third edition of their latest invented tradition. Ever since Roodkapje's earliest exhibitions at the start of the millennium in the Witte de Withstraat , there have been dinner parties involving performance. They turned into public events, in which the artist and a select number of visitors shared food for thought. In early 2015 chef Paul Smullenberg hosted a Weird Food From The Future - performance / dinner during Roodkapje's Radicals #1 festival in the former Baja Beach Club.

The Last Supper is the returning closing ritual of current and upcoming exhibitions in Roodkapje. Visitors are invited to join the artist at the dinner table for a series of exclusive and delicious artistic-culinary revelations in our exhibition space.
Their illustrious chef Paul Smullenberg (Roodkapje; Burgertrut / Foodigans) prepares some of his token extraordinary & extravagant dishes, inspired by the work and the exhibition of the artist-in-residence. Their current exhibition is 'The Half Sunk Hollow' by Madison Bycroft, which runs from 02/03 [Opening: Madison Bycroft | The Half Sunk Hollow [exhibition] to 31/04.

COLOR OF TIME
Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & Design (Japan)

As the world's first museum bringing Art and Design together, Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & Design has opened in August, 2017 in Toyama, Japan. The opening ceremony exhibition Part 2 "Art and Design, dialogue with materials" was held to introduce different characteristics and attractiveness of materials such as wood, metal and new forefront materials, shaped into various forms by artists and designers. In this exhibition, French architect/designer Emmanuelle Moureaux (1971)has worked with paper to show the beauty and possibility of paper as a material.
The sensory element "color", and the mathematical element "time". The installation "COLOR OF TIME" superimposes these two elements, to visualize and make one feel the flow of time. The first day of the exhibition, the sky of Toyama City on November 16, 2017. From the sunrise at 06:30, the color transitions through a total of 799 minutes, passing 18:11 astronomical twilight to 19:49, when the color disappears into blackness. This flow of time is perceived through the transitional journey through 100 shades of colors.

retrospective in house of craziness rotterdam

In March 2018 'The House of Craziness' has existed for 2 years at Haringvliet 401 Rotterdam. Wilma Kun, visual artist, feminist and cultural entrepeneur has organized montly exhibitions with artists mainly from the Randstad area in the ARTspace of cultural café and bookshop 'The House of Craziness.'

The festive opening of the retrospective in ARTspace takes place on Sunday 4 March at 4 o'clock. With Ida Brookhart Contemporary Textile Art and other artists with small artworks.

The House bar is open with wine & refreshments, all kinds of tea, coffee & homemade cakes and live Argentinian music.
